The Ravens' 2026 Defense: Built Around Kyle Hamilton
There's an argument to be made that the most important player on the Baltimore Ravens in 2026 isn't Lamar Jackson. It's safety Kyle Hamilton.
Hamilton re-signed with Baltimore on a massive extension, making him the NFL's highest-paid safety. And when you look at what he brings to this defense, it's hard to argue with the price.
What Hamilton Does
Hamilton is the rare defensive player who can line up everywhere. Deep safety. Box safety. Slot corner. Linebacker. Blitzer off the edge. In the 2025 season, he recorded 92 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, eight passes defensed, and seven tackles for loss. The only safety in the NFL, and one of just three defenders total, to hit those thresholds across the board.
New head coach Jesse Minter inherits that weapon and builds his defense around it.
The Linebacker Room
Roquan Smith returns at inside linebacker. The combination of Hamilton's versatility and Smith's sideline-to-sideline pursuit creates a chess match that offensive coordinators genuinely dread. Smith has been one of the most reliable tacklers in the NFL for several seasons, and he's not slowing down.
The Pass Rush Gets Upgraded
The Ravens addressed their biggest defensive weakness, their pressure rate (29th in the NFL in 2025 at 32.1%), by signing Trey Hendrickson to a four-year deal. Hendrickson is one of the game's elite edge rushers and gives Baltimore the true pass-rush presence they've been missing.
The Secondary
The cornerback room is deep. Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins anchor the outside, with Chidobe Awuzie adding veteran depth. Behind Hamilton, Malaki Starks is entering his second season and showed flashes as a rookie of the kind of instincts that could make him a Pro Bowl-caliber safety.
The Verdict
The 2026 Ravens defense has real teeth. If Hendrickson can get to the quarterback consistently, Hamilton can continue playing at an All-Pro level, and the secondary holds up, Baltimore has the defensive profile of a Super Bowl contender.
Darkness there and nothing more, for opposing offenses.
Flock On.
